The Television stations ought to non be permitted to uncover this kind of stuff and power to childs at such early ages. in view of the eventual outcomes it will hang on the teenagers and children. Above all else. there is way exorbitantly much power on broadcasting whether it is on some head cut channel. or on the other hand even a Saturday forenoon sketch plan. For some head cut Television appears. there are three to five hours vicious Acts of the Apostless per hr. For each Saturday plan for childs. there are around twenty to 25 vicious Acts of the Apostless per hr. ( Frazier ) This shows how much power there is on â€Å"children shows† . ( Frazier ) That implies per hebdomad. 60 for every centum of those 20s or so hours will hold something fierce that will hold a negative outcome on the children. Other than. orchestrating to the American Psychiatric Association in 1996. fledglings will hold saw 10. 000 phony slayings and 200. 000 Acts of the Apostless of power by the age of 18. ( Frazier ) Besides rehashed presentation to drive from broadcasting is unfortunate for the child’s character. With childs being around power while viewing â€Å"kid’s shows† . â€Å"the kid turns out to be less touchy towards its impacts on casualties and the human suffering it causes. ( Boyse ) Research has demonstrated in the past mature ages that the power on broadcasts so has a negative result on kids. Research from the National Institute of Mental Health in 1982. power is said to take to forceful conduct by children and teenagers. Indeed, even before this. one of the most notable surveies done in 1963 by Bandura demonstrated that power has a significant outcome on the individuals that see it. â€Å"He had a gathering of children see a Television image of a hypothetical record who kicked and rebuffed a hyperbolic plastic doll. After the screening. the children were put in an uproar live with different children who had non seen the image. Those that saw the image showed altogether more forceful conduct than the individuals who didn’t. † Other surveies indicated that childs who saw fierce sketchs had a high chance to non parcel their toys with others. Another study made in 1972 with Liebert and Baron. affirmed the discoveries of Bandura. â€Å"This overview researched children’s readiness to hurt different children in the wake of sing forceful Television plans. Two gatherings of children viewed an alternate Television plan. one of which had forceful substance and one of which was generic. The individuals who saw the forceful arrangement ( The Untouchables ) were seen as all the more ready to hurt another child in the wake of sing the arrangement than the individuals who viewed the generic arrangement ( a way race ) . † ( Frazier ) These unsafe impacts from the power depicted on broadcasting are assembled into three essential classs ; â€Å"children’s obtaining of forceful perspectives and practices ; desensitization. or on the other hand an expanded cruelty towards casualties of power ; and expanded or exaggerated dread of being deceived forcibly. While these impacts reflect unpropitious outcomes. it is the first †an expanded inclining for rough conduct †that is at the core of open wellbeing worry about broadcast power. † ( Kunkel ) Back to desensitization. â€Å"According to the article â€Å"Media Violence. † the American media shows saints legitimately using power as an organization to choose battle. The American Academy of Pediatrics site recommends that attracted out presentation to this sort of power augmentations belief of power as an office of maintain trip sources of income. The 1995 to 1997 AAP National Television Study indicated that 61 for each centum of programming â€Å"portrayed relational power. a lot of it in an engaging or glamorized mode. † Children are attracted to such planning when the rough demonstration appears to be phantasmagoric and the insufficiency of impact appealing. † ( Adams ) He other than expressed that power is both disinfected. â€Å"By cleaned. quick harming and desolation by survivors of power is remembered for not exactly 50% of all scenes of power. In excess of a third of fierce cooperations portray ridiculously gentle injury to casualties. horribly limiting the disagreeableness of hurt that would occur from such activities in the existent universe. In sum. most word pictures sterilize power by doing it seem to be considerably less excruciating and less hurtful than it genuinely is. By glamorized. I imply that power is performed by appealing capacity hypothetical records who are often supported for moving forcefully and who endure no regret. horrible judgment. or on the other hand discipline for their savage conduct. In excess of a third of all power is submitted by appealing characters. also, more than 66% of the power they submit happens with no signs of punishment. † ( Kunkel ) One other employment children may go up against is overexposure to compel. â€Å"Overexposure to compel. also, particularly reasonably portrayed power. may take children to accept that the universe is mostly a risky and shaky topographic point. They may get down to exaggerate the likelihood that they will be casualties of power. go forthing them with undue tension and accentuation. ( Frazier ) Other than doing enthusiastic occupations. it can do some damage to a child’s turning character or moral intentions. â€Å"Sigmund Freud accepted that children need to build up a feeling of ethical quality by the age of five or they could see inconveniences further down the road. In the event that a child doesn’t figure out how to comprehend the contrast among right and inaccurate. she will non build up a leg itimate anxiety of blame or contrition. what's more, will in this manner be bound to indict thoughtlessly in practices that are considered socially and ethically erroneous. The article â€Å"Children. Teenagers. also, Television† states that exploration has indicated broadcasting power to hold a negative outcome on the scholarly open introduction. sex. natural structure develops. furthermore, mental self portraits of youthful review crowds. which can take to brutal or forceful conduct and substance abuse. † ( Adams ) Nowadays. with these â€Å"reality shows† on MTV. The E Network. and so on it’s simple and ordinary to see power. Childs that watch â€Å"The Kardashians† and â€Å"Teen Mom† see their preferred well known people act in a way that is amateurish on broadcasting. be that as it may, they don’t know better. They need to be just similar to them. Network shows like those truly use power and â€Å"incidents† to help raise their assessment and ubiquity. ( Caning ) With these psychological impacts caused from too much screening of power. this demonstrates how broadcasting booking should be progressively delicate for the substance made for kids. In add-on. guardians ought to other than look for and loan in filtrating what their children watch on broadcasting. There are distinctive stairss you can take. that would perchance be able to let your child to non be presented to such power on Television appears. You can look for and watch broadcasting with your childs. That way. you’ll recognize what they watch. also, you can order the substance. ( Boyse ) Other choices incorporate reviewing the substance of the arrangement or perhaps just allotting them a shorter entirety of clasp to sit in front of the Television. In any event that way. there is a littler open door for power in the littler clasp space. ( Frazier ) One other great way to keep up your child’s mind off of broadcasting is look for and obtain them included like different exercises. Sports. perusing. employments. and so forth ; anything like that. Another great idea is look for and address your childs about power in media. On the off chance that you can explain to them why power is mistaken. so you can be progressively lightened and swear them. ( Boyse ) Good imparting is cardinal. On the off chance that you attempt to change over to your child that you are only trying to be concerned and mindful. they’ll comprehend the point you are looking to do. In choice. I accept that children merit better than what is directly going on. As their capacity hypothetical records. we have to help do their â€Å"future† safe. We have to forbid all power from children’s booking. TV stations shouldn’t be permitted to uncover wrong stuff and power to

How Blue Lava Works

Indonesias Kawah Ijen volcano has gained internet fame for Paris-based photographer  Olivier Grunewalds photographs of its stunning electric blue lava. However, the blue glow doesnt actually come from lava and the phenomenon isnt restricted to that volcano. Heres a look at the chemical composition of the blue stuff and where you can go to see it. What Is Blue Lava? The lava that flows from the Kawah Ijen volcano on the island of Java is the usual glowing red color of molten rock flowing from any volcano. The flowing electric blue color arises from the combustion of sulfur-rich gases. Hot, pressurized gases push through cracks in the volcano wall, burning as they come into contact with air. As they burn, sulfur condenses into a liquid, which flows downward. Its still burning, so it looks like blue lava. Because the gases are pressurized, the blue flames shoot up to 5 meters in the air. Because sulfur has a relatively low melting point of  Ã‚  239 °F (115 °C), it can flow for some distance before solidifying into the familiar yellow form of the element. Although the phenomenon occurs all the time, the blue flames are most visible at night. If you view the volcano during the day, it wouldnt appear unusual. Unusual Colors of Sulfur Sulfur is an interesting non-metal that displays different colors, depending on its state of matter. Sulfur burns with a blue flame. The solid is yellow. Liquid sulfur is blood red (resembling lava). Because of its low melting point and availability, you can burn sulfur in a flame and see this for yourself. When it cools, elemental sulfur forms a polymer or plastic or monoclinic crystals (depending on conditions), that spontaneously change into rhombic crystals. Make Plastic SulfurMake Sulfur Crystals Where To View Blue Lava The Kawah Ijen volcano releases unusually high levels of sulfuric gases, so its probably the best place to view the phenomenon. It is a 2-hour hike to the rim of the volcano, followed by a 45-minute hike down to the caldera. If you travel to Indonesia to see it, you should bring a gas mask to protect yourself from the fumes, which may be harmful to your health. Workers who collect and sell the sulfur typically do not wear protection, so you can leave your mask for them when you leave. Although the Kawah volcano is most readily accessible, other volcanoes in the Ijen may also produce the effect. Although it is less spectacular at other volcanoes in the world, if you view the base of any eruption at night, you may see the blue fire. Another volcanic location known for the blue fire is Yellowstone National Park. Forest fires have been known to melt and burn sulfur, causing it to flow as burning blue rivers in the park. Traces of these flows appear as black lines. Molten sulfur may be found around many volcanic fumaroles. If the temperature is high enough, the sulfur will burn. Although most fumaroles arent open to the public during the night (for fairly obvious safety reasons), if you live in a volcanic region, it might be worth watching and waiting for sunset to see if there is blue fire or blue lava. Fun Project To Try If you dont have sulfur but want to make a glowing blue eruption, grab some tonic water, Mentos candies, and a black light and make a glowing Mentos volcano.

This symbol contributes to Wolff?s message or theme showing the husband?s strong dislike for African Americans. After the author uses this symbolization of a ?flat gray?, the wife ?plunged her hands under the surface? (Wolff 518) and cut her finger on the silverware. She then cries out as her thumb bleeds from the cut. The husband immediately rushes to her need. He acted in concern for her and hoped she appreciated how quick he rushed to her aid. The cut she had from the silverware symbolizes the hurt on the inside. The pain from inside was symbolizing the pain on the inside. Her husband?s inconsiderate feelings for alternate races made her feel like she didn?t know him as well as she thought she did. Wolff used symbolization very effectively by comparing the pain on the outside to the pain on the inside. Wolff?s decision to put in this description of dirty water was not because Wolff hates washing dishes. Wolff put that in there to show a deeper meaning to it. Wolff is trying to show the husband?s views on the topic being discussed indirectly. Wolff shows a deeper meaning when the husband is continuing to wash the dishes. He is spraying the silverware and ?darkened to pale blue? (Wolff 518). This shows again the husband?s reference to colors. This happened right after the wife asked if he would marry her if she were black. Marketing Consumer Behavior

Question: Analyse the internal and external factors influencing the consumer decision making process for a major purchase. Answer: Consumer Buying Behavior Consumer behavior is the phase that the consumers undergo while making a major purchase and this behavior is constantly influenced by external and internal factors of usage and decision. Based on the real-life situations, the buying behavior of the consumers are in a constant stage of evolving. The process of decision-making undergoes five critical stages while buying services and goods and therefore, the marketer has to identify and understand these five steps for proper proceedings towards the product and close the selling process (Solomon, 2014). Presently, one of the most testing situations of the marketers is the identification of the demand of the consumers and explanation for the requirement of a specific service or product. This information related to purchasing decision is crucial for the marketers to understand as it helps them to identify what have the most significance for the consumers and the factors that influence their decision making regarding a purchase. This helps them to create their marketing strategies and programs according to the need of the consumers. The five steps of decision making by the consumer are information search, information, alternative evaluation, post-purchase behavior and purchase. These steps serve as guidelines for the marketers that help them to understand the requirements and communication of the consumers and act accordingly (Juster, 2015). It is not necessary for the consumers to move exactly as stated but it depends on the financial status, the buying stage and the type of the product. The present report is about the decision making of a consumer while purchasing a car. Since it is a major purchase, therefore the internal and external factors influencing the consumer decision makingwill be critically analyzed. This report is based on the decision making of Mr. David Jones, who happens to be one of my acquaintance while he was about to purchase a new Toyota Corolla. Internal Influences The internal influence that affects the decision making of the consumers regarding a major purchase depends on the way of thinking and lifestyle of the consumers. These are also known as the psychological influences and depicts several stages of decision making like identification of feelings, examination and collection of information, development of beliefs and ideas and taking the specific action (Solomon, Russell-Bennett Previte, 2013). Mr. Jones is a banker in Melbourne with a descent income and he decides to buy a new car as per his needs. He has a family of two children and they have their preferences while making the decision for purchasing the new car. Several recommendations came up and was finalized with Toyota Corolla. This finalization was influenced by several internal factors that have been summarized below. Perception: It is a psychological variable that is involved in the decision making of purchasing a car and influences the behavior of the consumer. The individuals perceive their requirements through the media messages and disregard the remaining (Butkevi ien, Stravinskien Rtelionien, 2015). Perception is of two types that include the low-level one called as perceptual vigilance and the high level one called as perceptual defense and these are shaped by expectations, memory and learning. Mr. Jones before buying the car went through an extensive research process and estimated several other cars in the same category according to his need and budget. However, he went on information from different media sources and finally shortlisted a few names according to his perception that stressed mostly on the safety and security of his family. Learning: Learning is a change in the organization or content of behavior or long-term memory. It enables the consumers to acquire the consumption and purchase knowledge and the experience regarding the behavior that is related to the future. Learning can be acquired by thorough information search from different sources or may be through incidental learning. Learning provides useful direction towards the motive of purchasing (Lysonski Durvasula, 2013). After a thorough investigation from the various resources, Mr. Jones learned much about the cars that are the best fit for his requirements. He needed a car that could help him to go to his office daily and go for family outings as well. Therefore, a sedan would best fit his requirements and so he learned much about the sedans from everywhere. Motivation: It is related to the desire of having the expected outcome and is closely associated with the involvement of the consumer in decision-making. Consumers that are highly motivated will get actively involved physically and mentally in the process of purchasing (Betsch Haberstroh, 2014). Marketers can make the consumers motivated by providing them with opportunities for learning more about their product and allowing them to experience the services of the product. Mr. Jones collected information about the sedans from several websites and other media articles actively and went through the video previews. While conducting the research, he analyzed several situations related to his financial position, overall value, time constraints and perceived risk. To all his questions, an answer pointed towards the sedans. Moreover, Toyota was offering a free test drive offer for their sedans at his city that motivated him to go for a sedan by Toyota. Personality: It signifies the psychological characteristics that state the reaction of a person to his surrounding environment. Personality reflects the choice of the consumers for a particular brand or product and helps the marketer to promote the products. Personality is categorized based on the traits, likes and dislikes of the individuals (Lee et al., 2014). Since Mr. Jones is a banker and aged about 30 years, therefore he would prefer a brand that would suit his personality and occupation. Toyota is a reputed brand in Australia and has been awarded for on-road performance of its vehicles, especially its sedans (Vohs et al., 2014). Mr. Jones will be using his car for multiple uses like daily transport to his workplace and family outings, therefore, sedans by Toyota will suit his personality the most according to the looks, features, comfort and safety. Attitude: Attitude is a conglomerate of the feelings, behavioral intentions and belief of the consumers towards an object with reference to the context of marketing. These components are interdependent and collectively represent the attitude of the consumer towards the object. It is a psychological variable that affects the decision-making process of the consumers regarding a purchase and evolves out of a negative or positive evaluation (Aguirre-Rodriguez, Bosnjak Sirgy, 2012). Mr. Jones, after the research work and test drive, was certain of his choice for the sedan by Toyota as it met all his expectations and requirements successfully. He developed a positive attitude towards the brand and decided to go for Toyota Corolla as it was the best in its class in terms of price and features. He decided to discuss the car with his family as his family is actively involved in the decision-making and he would like to take their viewpoints and suggestions into consideration. External Influences Apart from the internal influences, external influences also affect the behavior of the consumers. These influences are not individualistic but are external to the consumer. Consumers are human beings that live in a society where they are attached socially in groups. The members of the groups tend to share their common interests and influence each other, as they share their values and rules. Most of the influence is from the primary groups like the family members and the secondary groups include the organizations and clubs, which have lesser influence when compared to the primary group (Oliver, 2014). Both these groups exert the social power that influences the behavior of a consumer while decision making. Two of these external influences have been discussed below. Culture: Cultural factors include the set of ideologies and values of a particular group of individuals. Cultural factors influence the decision making of an individual as every individual has different principles, beliefs and habits that he develops from his backgrounds and family status (Srensen, 2015). Mr. Jones is a native Australian and therefore, he likes to go for a car that is descent in looks as well as superior in performance. According to his position in office, he would like to go for a brand and model that suits well his personality and position. His car would reflect his social success and therefore, he would pay more attention towards the brand value, rather than a cheaper alternative. Group Influence: Since human beings are socially inherent, various individuals in a group influence each other. The framework for the analysis of group influence on the consumers is called reference groups where the consumer uses a group as a standard reference against which, he makes the comparisons (Beach, 2014). Various degrees of influences come from the reference groups. The primary groups have a huge influence, as they are the members of a fraternity while secondary groups have lesser influence like the weekend groups. Mr. Jones discussed his idea of buying Toyota Corolla with his friends and club associates, as it was an important decision that involves a major financial investment. Therefore, he was looking for feedbacks and loopholes that he might have missed in his research. The ideas and suggestions would help him to strengthen or reconsider his decision. Final decision making After all the decision making process, Mr. Jones purchased a new Toyota Corolla as it was a safe and affordable vehicle for his daily use. His family influenced him for safety and his age and financial status influenced him for not being too much extravagant on luxury cars. The decision making process was a lengthy one as purchasing a car turned out to be a complex process. The car satisfies his requirements and fits perfectly in his budget. Consequently, the marketers should also understand the buying decision of the consumers and their safety needs. References Aguirre-Rodriguez, A., Bosnjak, M., Sirgy, M. J. (2012). Cyber Defense Program in Military Schools Essay Example

Cyber Defense Program in Military Schools Essay Cyberspace has developed into a difficult abstraction presenting innumerable fresh potential and services as well as possibilities for enemies to cause destruction. Lately, the United States Armed Forces has affixed â€Å"Cyberspace† to its mission statement because it distinguished the substantial effect of this new field of expertise. Education act as a fundamental role in producing cyber soldiers to maintain the mission of the United States Military. (Dodge Ragsdale, 2005) The NSA funded the cyber defense exercises presenting priceless real-world knowledge about the new field of cyberspace. The Cyber Defense curriculum was started in the Military schools in 1999. Another reason for the implementation of the Cyber Defense Curriculum for the military schools is the increasingly plausible fact of the growing number of hackers that threatens national defense. The Y2K predicament was a significant problem that was faced in the start of the millennium. (Dodge Ragsdale, 2005) Students started to receive training on how to create and defend cyber weaponry. The course was called Information Assurance. The objective of the course was to enhance consciousness of security issues with information systems. (Felder Brent, 2003) In the Information Assurance course, learn many offensive and defensive techniques in the cyber domain. Cadets can write malevolent applets and viruses but at the same time, form defense mechanisms from it. The reason of this course is not to craft them to become hackers but give them the knowledge of how potential enemies might exercise cyber warfare and target their vulnerability especially in the commercially prevailing information systems. The partakers chosen were the West Point Academy, the US Air Force Academy and the Naval Postgraduate School. The schools were divided into teams were engaged into a cyber warfare. The team that scored the most number of points in the offensive and defensive ordeal is declared the winner. In the successive years, more military school joined the competition. (Cyber Defense Exercise, 2009) Evaluations of the Cyber Defense Program There were several evaluations that were made for the Cyber Defense Course and its relative fields. The studies focused on both technical and general aspect of the program. Although it was effective in developing the skills of the cadets, some other issues were still in question. The following were some of the research questions of the evaluations: Is the Cyber Defense Program cost efficient? In the study of Schepens et. Al. in 2003, it focused on the cost efficiency and impact of the Cyber Defense Course. The rough estimate of conducting the course would be $20,000 for all the hardware and software components. (Schepens, Schafer, Surdu, Ragsdale, 2002) Other costs were not yet included like technical monitoring and repair. The question rising would be if the hefty cost is worth the increase in education effectiveness. (Tomes, 2000) There is an eminent intuitive interest to the concept that innovative experience provided by the Information Assurance course. When cadets essentially execute an attack, they must also depict how they would guard against several attacks. The twofold function of the course instigates self learning since technology constantly upgrade. The course trains a student’s critical, analytic and amalgamating skills. (Schepens, et al., 2002) Some remarks of the students under the first Information Assurance course said that it was a fresh breath of air and that it was invigorating to have hands down experience and learning about cyber defense. Another comment of the course is that it teaches them the indispensable lesson that security is an immense field to defend and it continuously expands. (Tomes, 2000) In terms of the cost efficiency, the starting point of the Information Assurance program was expensive and was shouldered by the National Security Agency. (Augustine Dodge, 2006) In time, more military schools implemented the Information Assurance course. With additional military school consumers, the expenditure of the course basically lessened. In another evaluation for cost efficiency of the Cyber Defense Program, it was noted that military schools can use open source software. Open source is computer software for which the source code and further rights are presented beneath a software license that convenes the open source characterization. (Gourley, 2009) This characterization allows consumers to utilize, alter and develop the software and restructure it in modified or unmodified figure. An example of Open Source software is Linux and an example of Closed Source software is Microsoft. Open Source software is continuously accessible for assessment, and in the majority situations it is cultivated in an open, public, mutual approach. Open source does not just signify approach to the source code, but also give the user the power to develop something greater. (Gourley, 2009) Another feature of open source is its inexpensive price. Since most of the open source software is not in the mainstream of the market, their prices are lower than the trendy closed source software. Therefore, the use of open source software can lower the cost of the Information Assurance course. (Gourley, 2009) One downfall for the use of open source software is its advance interface for beginners. It is not so much user friendly than its rival closed software. (Gourley, 2009) In a military school that is starting Information Assurance, its students might not be that specialized with open source software. Nevertheless, the application of open source software in Information Assurance can be cost minimization scheme. Is the Cyber Defense Program time effective? In another study, the time effectiveness of the program was evaluated. The Cyber Defense Program demonstrated numeral of effective dealings utilized to preclude, or perceive, compromises. However, it is substantial that the application and execution of the course require more time to operate than regular military courses. (Mullins, Lacey, Mills, 2007) Also, scrupulously understanding attacks and defends were essential for safe security operations, but requiring a tedious learning process. Furthermore, it was imperative to make sure the systems applied have been correctly patched and renewed. It should be mentioned that in real-world procedures, patch management is a multifaceted matter that needs receptiveness and attention. This makes additional time consumption. Another time spending effect of the Cyber Defense Program is the time and resource intensity for the workload of the instructor. (Mullins, et al., 2007) However, even with time consuming activities of the course, it is still being managed. Military schools somehow compress the activities to course to conserve time consumption. The faculty of the military schools that has Information Assurance courses remark that the additional load given are worth the excellent performance of the students. Another remarkable activity of the course that improves time utilization is the further engagement in Cyber Defense Exercise between different schools. (Adams, Lacey, Gavas, Leblanc, 2009) This was mentioned earlier in the paper in which military schools take part in the annual Information Warfare. The warfare investigates the effectiveness and time efficiency of the Information Assurance course in the schools. Cadets will build up their own team and represent their school. The Information Warfare improves time effectiveness of the course because it compels the cadets to attack and defend as fast as possible in a certain given time. The improvemen t in time effectiveness in the course is a huge factor that helps the military schools to win the competition. In a given school year, cadets with potential skills in Information Assurance are time pressured to create attacks and concoct defensive schemes in a nick of time. (Adams, et al., 2009) The inclusiveness of time effectiveness in course permeates the time saving scheme in the program. In a recent Information Warfare between several military schools, the winner of the competition was the school that attacked and defended in the most number of times in a given time limit.   (Mullins, et al., 2007) Therefore, it can be deduced that time effectiveness is correlated with successful Information Assurance courses. Table 1. 2006 Cyber Defense Exercise Results School Score AFIT 50,550 USAFA 48,425 USMA 46,600 USNA 45,650 USCGA 44,100 USMMA 43,725 (Mullins, et al., 2007) Results and Conclusion The following evaluations were clear in addressing two vital concerns about the Cyber Defense Program which is cost efficiency and time effectiveness. In the cost effectiveness of the program, the evaluations clearly pointed out that the Cyber Defense Program is costly. A plausible solution for this predicament would be the increase of Information Assurance course military school users. The greater the consumers of the course would result into a reduced expenditure. Therefore, the Information Assurance course should be promoted to the different military schools around the United States. Also, it can be opened that the Information Assurance course should not be held back to military schools exclusively. Other school should also access the course for further learning improvement. Another concern of the evaluations would be the use of cheaper software. The open source software is relatively economical than the other commercially closed software. The problem concerned with open source software for the Information Assurance course would be its advanced interface in which new users of the program might not easily familiarize with the system compared to the other software. Therefore, it should be recommended that open source software may be used by military schools that have an established experience in Information Assurance to lessen expenditure and greater progress into advance technical systems. Time effectiveness was also addressed as an issue on the Information Assurance course. The technicality and complexity of the program spends much time. In a certain evaluation, it was seen that the military school faculty can still cope-up with the additional time effort as long as they can see the improvement in the cadets. Another activity that boosts the time effectiveness of the course is the construction of Cyber Defense Exercise between military schools. It inculcates time effectiveness in the students in attacking and defending during a certain period of time. However, it was not yet certain whether an increase in the budget of the Information Assurance course would increase the effectiveness of the program. Therefore the creation of competitive and spirited competition should be increased because it can improve the time effectiveness of the course. In all the gathered evaluations for Cyber Defense Program, it was unanimous that the students positively liked the program and has increased their analytic and cognitive skills. In a generalization, even with some unresolved matters, the effectiveness of the program is unwavering. The benefits produced by the program outweigh its costs. Therefore, the Cyber Defense Program should continue and grow. REFERENCES Adams, W. J., Lacey, T., Gavas, E., Leblanc, S. P. (2009). Augustus and Pax Romana Essay Example

Augustus and Pax Romana Essay Example Augustus and Pax Romana Paper Augustus and Pax Romana Paper Name: Course: Tutor: Date: Augustus and Pax Romana Pax Romana is a Latin word that literally means the Roman Peace. It was a period in the Roman Empire that had relative peace. There was minimal military force expansion and this period lasted for approximately two hundred years. The leader who is attributed to having established this period was Caesar Augustus. Through this period, there was economic growth, art and architectural development and the commerce flourished. Augustus contribution to the Pax Romana period became a foundation to the Western rule in the past and Today. As earlier identified, Augustus is mostly credited for establishing this period. This period began after he won the Battle of Actium by defeating Marc Anthony. Since he could not succeed using the one-man rule, he formed a junta of which he placed himself as the front man. The junta was formed by joining the two great military magnates. This was a form of eliminating civil war. Even though this did not mark the end of civil wars (there was a civil war in the Alps and Spain) and Pax Romana did not begin immediately, it paved the way for its existence. By closing the Gates of Janus (Roman ceremony marking world peace) thrice, the Period slowly came into being. Through propaganda, he was able to convince the citizens that peace was better and more flourishing than obtaining wealth through dangerous wars (Matz Lawrence 150). The above only took place between the 27 B.C and 14 AD, the period, which Augustus ruled. Nevertheless, this strong foundation made this period last for another 160years. Due to its strong foundation, the period successful lasted through the Commodus rule. This is because he misruled despotically and with dispendious excesses. This ruling made the roman politics be unstable in the middle of the Germanic invasions. When Cosmmodus was assassinated, the crisis was resolved, and the peace period continued. This period was faced by many challenges even by the succeeding rulers. However, most of them followed the actions of Augustus in order to maintain this peace. When a crisis came up they sometimes made lavish ceremonies in order to close the Gates of Janus. In other cases, coins with Pax on the reverse were issued to the citizens as a way of encouraging them to choose peace over war. Literature that advocated the advantages of the Pax Romana were also established. All these enabled this era to last until the fall of the Julio-Claudian and the Nero line. It is important to note that this period was called the peace period because there were law and civil order thus lesser civil wars and other wars that came due to lack of these concepts. Due to this great foundation, most of the Western laws are formed from the Roman law. The founders of the United States spoke of establishing the Augustan Age when they decided to establish the Office of the president (Matz Lawrence 216). This meant that they recognized the works done by this emperor, the effectiveness of his concepts during his time and the centuries after. Caesar Augustus contributions to the Pax Romana were not only effective during his reign, but they were also effective in the succeeding reigns. They are greatly recognized in the modern ruling and thus incorporated in the making of some European laws. Although there are other rulers who played their role in making sure that this period was established for the longest time, he laid down the basics and the concepts. His persistent nature and propaganda were also helpful in making sure that the people got a hold of his concepts, even though they were not effected immediately as expected.

The Effects Of Mobile Phones Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

The Effects Of Mobile Phones - Essay Example Health Problems According to BBC News (2002), studies have linked the use of mobile phones with headaches, hotspots in the brain as well as cancer. However, Foster and Moulder (2000) indicated that lawsuits that have been filed in courts in the United States have not been able to provide any concrete evidence of this claim as there has been no proven associated increase in cancer among the population and the complainants have not been able to provide any evidence to substantiate that their case is caused by the use of mobile phones. ARPHANSA (n.d.) has also indicated that although there is a possibility of a small risk, there is no clear evidence in the scientific literature to suggest that it poses a long-term health hazard. Teenagers are high users of mobile phones. Studies carried out in the U.K. have found that approximately 80% of 11 to 14 year olds own a mobile phone (The Institute of Science in Society n.d.). Studies also indicate that prolonged use may cause teenage brains to age prematurely (The Institute of Science in Society n.d.). Behavioral Problems in Young Children According to Divan et al (2010), prenatal and postnatal exposures to mobile phones have resulted in behavioral problems in young children.

Illicit Trafficking of All Types Research Paper

Illicit Trafficking of All Types - Research Paper Example The activities along these ports have attracted human traffickers, drug barons and even terrorists. Many South American illegal goods find their way in Africa through the ports in the Indian Ocean. This may be attributed to corruption and poor custom laws and regulations (Ploch, 2010). With the effects of the trafficking activities affecting many international countries the sensitivity of the matter has increased. In this paper I will focus on Kenya activities along the Kenyan coast. The paper will focus on human, drugs and weapon trafficking in Kenya. Additionally, it will focus on the effects of these activities in the country and the international community. The paper will have an insight on how the trafficking activities affect the United States. Kenya’s port city of Mombasa is one of the largest cities along the coast of the horn of Africa. Neighboring countries like Uganda and Rwanda use the port for export purposes since they are landlocked. This has made the port becom e the largest port in East Africa. This has attracted interests from many illegal stakeholders. First on focus is the issue of weapon trafficking. According to Shelly (2010) about 5,000 illegal firearms enter the country on an annual basis. These weapons find their way into the hands of interested people in the country. They are later sold at cheaper prices to pastoralist communities and other illegal gangs. In other instances, the firearms end up in other neighboring countries. Apart from the trafficking of firearms, explosive devices in Kenya are also on the increase. During this year, the country has had about seven explosive attacks in major cities. The explosives used in the scenes are said to have originated from a foreign country. Most firearms in Kenya are usually from the neighboring Somalia or destined to Somalia. Somalia is an unstable country, hence, traffickers find it an easier route to smuggle weapons to Kenya. Weapon trafficking in Kenya also involves top government officials. These powerful individuals are usually the masterminds of trafficking activities in the country. This hinders any investigative procedures from taking place. Weapon trafficking in Kenya has greatly affected the United States. In the year 1998 the US embassy was a main target in a terrorist attack in Nairobi. The terrorist attack was the worst attack experienced in the country. The Al- Qaeda group claimed responsibility for the attack and said it was aimed at destroying the US embassy. This was evidence that weapon trafficking in the country is a more complicated and strategized crime (Clinton, 2010). The United States government had to highly compensate the victims of the attack. Drug trafficking in Kenya has also been an emerging issue as far legality is concerned. Through its coastal town Mombasa, drugs enter the country from South American countries. Large consignments of drugs find their way to Kenya through various entry points. Entry points include border with neigh boring countries, through airports and majorly through the port of Mombasa. In the coastal city, many youths are now in rehabilitation centers after being exposed to drugs at a very young age. Many youths turn into small scale peddlers. They sell the drugs to school students and other young people. This has destroyed the young generation in Kenyan coastal region. Just like the weapon trafficking menace, powerful personalities are greatly involved in the smuggling of drugs into the country (Ploch, 2010). From the coastal

Salem Witch Trials and Vengeance Essay Example for Free

Salem Witch Trials and Vengeance Essay In Arthur Millers play, The Crucible, vengeance plays a major role in the actions of the characters through the witchcraft trials in the Puritan village of Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. Anger, jealousy, rejection, and betrayal all occur throughout the play and are all things that could provoke someone to seek vengeance on someone else. Abigail Williams, niece of Reverend Parris, is one of the main characters who is very guilty of wanting vengeance on others throughout The Crucible. In Act I, the reader gets a taste of who each character is and the previous troubles theyve had with each other at Reverend Parris house, where many of the characters have come to check on Betty who is supposedly ill after a night of dancing in the woods. Abigail shows that she does not favor Elizabeth Proctor when Parris asks her why she was no longer a servant for the Proctor household. Abigail replied to him, â€Å"She hates me, uncle, she must, for I would not be her slave. Its a bitter woman, a lying, cold, sniveling woman, and I will not work for such a woman! † (Miller 1240). This statement foreshadows that there was an incident between the Proctors and Abigail while she was working for them. Then once Abigail and John Proctor are alone in Bettys room, she speaks to him about his affair with her and how she waits for him every night. He then tells her, â€Å"Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before Ill ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind. We never touched, Abby. † (Miller 1246). This greatly angered Abigail. Feeling a sense of rejection, she decided that she needed to seek vengeance on Elizabeth, since she is unable to be with John. Also, when Abigail was alone with Betty and Mary Warren, she threatened to get vengeance on them if either of them turned her in. â€Å"And mark this. Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you. And you know I can do it; I saw Indians smash my dear parents heads on the pillow next to mine and I have seen some reddish work done at night, and I can make you wish you had never seen the sun go down! † (Miller 1244). After reading about Abigails anger towards the other characters, it is very evident that she will be a major problem throughout the rest of the play. Knowing that Abigail was very angry about John Proctor, it was like her character to get accusations in order against Elizabeth Proctor. Not only did Abigail hate Elizabeth, but she also saw her as the only thing holding John back from being with her, which is selfish, yet typical. In Act II John and Elizabeth end up arguing about him going into Salem that day, which turned into an argument about Johns affair with Abigail. It is then, that Mary Warren comes home with a poppet to give to Elizabeth as a gift. Once Mary informs them that Elizabeths name was mentioned in court she automatically knows that Abigail has to be behind this searching for vengeance. â€Å"It is her dearest hope, John, I know it. There be a thousand names; why does she call mine? There be a certain danger in calling such a name I am no Goody Good that sleeps in ditches, nor Osburn, drunk and half-witted. Shed dare not call out such a farmers wife but there be monstrous profit in it. She thinks to take my place, John. † (Miller 1274). When Elizabeth was about to get taken away after finding the poppet, John was angry and said, â€Å"If she is innocent! Why do you never wonder if Parris be innocent, or Abigail? Is the accuser always holy now? Were they born this morning as clean as Gods fingers? Ill tell you whats walking Salem vengeance is walking Salem. We are what we always were in Salem, but now the little crazy children are jangling the keys of the kingdom, and common vengeance writes the law! This warrants vengeance! Ill not give my wife to vengeance! † (Miller 1283). Act III of The Crucible takes place in court and John Proctor ends up confessing to having an affair with Abigail when he says, â€Å"She used to serve me in my house, sir. A man may think God sleeps, but God sees everything. I know it now. I beg you, sir, I beg you see her what she is She thinks to dance with me on my wifes grave! And well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweat. But it is a whores vengeance† (Miller 1309). Not only did this cause an emotional breakdown for John, it also disclosed that Abigail only set Elizabeth up with the needle in the poppet to get her out of the way so she could be with John. Even though Abigail had managed to get vengeance on Elizabeth Proctor, she still did not reach her goal of being with John Proctor. Instead, all of her conniving tricks, ridiculous accusing, ealousy, lying and pretending led John to his death; leaving Abigail Williams with nothing but â€Å"his name†. In this play, the salvation of innocent people has been sacrificed for the satisfaction of one seeking vengeance on another; innocent or not, confession was the only way to get out of death. It goes to show that vengeance can go a long way if the hatred, jealousy and anger is strong enough. In Arthur Millers play, The Crucible, vengeance plays a major role in the actions of the characters through the witchcraft trials in the Puritan village of Salem, Massachusetts in 1692.

The Benefits of Environmentally Responsible Residential Housing Essays

The Benefits of Environmentally Responsible Residential Housing    Beginning in the 1960s, our society has become increasingly aware of mankind’s negative impact on the earth. We have heard more about topics such as pollution, water contamination, Acid Rain, and Global Warming. All of these environmental concerns have displayed a need for more environmentally sensitive development. Environmentally responsible residential development is defined by Brewster as, "the production of building and communities that conserve resources and reduce waste through more efficient use of materials, energy, and water; that are more durable and useful; and that are designed for adaptive use or the recycling of their materials" (33). By definition alone, this type of development fits the description of sensitive development. I propose that we, as a society, must provide more incentives to encourage development such as environmentally responsible residential houses, because it will help reduce pollution, conserve limited and natural resources, and ensure a susta inable future. The need for such housing must be established with consumers before more environmentally responsible houses are demanded in the market. One reason for this type of building, would be to properly address the problems of the energy crisis. The Oxford English Dictionary defines the energy crisis as, "a serious shortage of energy-producing fuels" (Simpson 5:241). Today, we are consuming our fossil fuels at ten million times the rate they are produced naturally (Griffin 4). At this rate, we will eventually deplete all of our fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gases. The energy crisis also addresses another reason to build environmentally responsible development, which... ...itute, 1974. Loeb, Penny. Substitution and Income Effects of the Working Tax Credit on Labour Supply

Labour essay: Having considered the implications for the WTC, we can now analyse the effects of the policy on labour supply by determining the substitution and income effects. It’s clear that the effect of the working tax credit on work behaviour depends upon how much a worker is currently working. To analyse these effects we will only look at one type of individual; a lone parent in the labour force. This will simplify our analysis such that we can divide the diagram below into 3 sections and describe the effects separately. draw:frame} Figure 1: Diagram showing how the imposition of the WTC affects the individuals labour supply decision When the lone parent is either not working at all, or working less than 16 hours (Labelled A in the diagram), her current wage rate and therefore income is unaffected by the WTC. This is simply because they have not yet received any tax credit and therefore have no added incentives to work. However, if they work over16 hours, the programme wi ll raise their overall take home wage as they receive a lump sum payment, shown by the first vertical blue line. Therefore, at this low level of work, there is a very small, or 0, income effect, and a positive substitution effect, thus increasing the individual’s labour supply. These effects are the same as would be under an increase in the wage rate, shown diagrammatically in Figure 2. {draw:frame} Figure 2: Diagram showing the effects of a wage increase The movement around the original indifference curve from A to C is the substitution effect; this arises due the change in price of leisure relative to hours of work, holding utility as constant. As the wage rate has increased the opportunity cost of leisure opposed to work has risen. The substitution effect encourages the worker to decrease his hours of leisure. The movement from C to B donates the income effect illustrating the workers response to an increase in real income. Overall, the substitution effect dominates the income effect and therefore increases labour supply from L1 to L2. There is also the possibility that the income effect may overpower the substitution effect resulting in a decrease in the supply of labour. However, this depends on the position of the indifference curves, hence the worker’s preferences for work and leisure. On the other hand, it is unlikely at this low wage rate for the worker to choose leisure over the opportunity to earn a higher wage. Section ‘C’ of our WTC diagram shows the area at which an individual works more than 30 hours. The worker’s net income is now higher at this point, however the worker’s marginal wage is lower which is demonstrated by the gradient of the WTC line being shallower than gradient of the No WTC line. The Substitution and Income effects here are the same as would be with a decrease in wage. Both the Income and substitution effects work together to reduce the amount of labour; shown in Figure 3: {draw:frame} Figure 3: Diagram showing the effects of a wage decrease The substitution effect is shown by the movement around the old indifference curve, from A to C. The income effect is shown by the movement from A to B. Although the substitution effect is stronger, both effects work together to reduce the hours of work from L1 to L3. Lastly, section ‘B’ represents the area at which an individual works between 16 and 30 hours. Here, the effects of the WTC on labour supply are much more complex. Despite the gradient of the WTC line being the same as section C, this time there is the possibility of increasing work to above 30 hours and receiving the additional payment. This therefore results in lone parents bunching around the 16 and 30 hour marks in order to gain the greatest benefit from the WTC payment. Some will therefore substitute leisure for work and work longer hours to gain the additional bonus at 30 hours, whilst others will choose to forgo work for leisure and be content with the benefit of working over 16 hours.

The World Of Online Business And Internet Marketing

Greetings Name, In today s lesson we are going to talk about failure! (I know...exciting right?!?) Let s be real, most people who get into internet marketing end up failing in one way or another. Failing looks different to different people. Some recover from their failures and come back stronger with more success, but most simply give up and run far, far away from anything to do with internet marketing. So...what exactly does failure look like in the world of online business and internet marketing? Does it look like not getting the instant money you were promised when you fell for that guru s lies? Does it look like you not getting to quit your job, buy your dream home and car, and move to the Bahamas within a few months of starting your first online business? NO!!! No, each and every one of those things I mentioned are not failures in my book. Those things not happening causes you to realize starting your own online business isn t as easy and effortless as many of those gurus try to convince you it is. In fact, in many cases, they don t want you to achieve what they promised because they re hoping you ll keep coming back and buying their fraudulent products as you continue to chase the dream lifestyle they are shoving in your face! Robert Frost Home Burial - Selfish Misery Essay - 1662 Words

The Selfish Misery of Home Burial Robert Frosts poem Home Burial is an intriguing portrait of a marital relationship that has gone wrong. Though at first glance it may seem that the cause for the couples trouble is the death of their child, closer reading allows the reader to see that there are other serious, deeper-rooted problems at work. The couples differences in their approach to grieving is only the beginning of their problems. Many of the real problems lie in the wifes self-absorbed attitude of consuming unhappiness and anger. Her outlook on her life and marriage is so narrow that she winds up making both her husband and herself victims of her issues. It is clear that Frost intended the reader to see through the†¦show more content†¦Rather, she dehumanizes him in her mind, thinking of him as a blind creature who wont be able to understand her pain (15-16). When he asks what is disturbing her, she refuse[s] him any help (13). She is making the deliberate decision not to let him be a caring person. Even when he tells her that hes seen the cause of her window gazing, she refuses to believe him. Frost has her immediately contradict the husbands realization, using the word challenge to conjure up a better image of the wifes defensive nature. While the husband is understanding of his wifes pain, she refuses to allow him any. The husband tells her to try and talk to him, insisting that he is not so much unlike other folks (63). Even though he admits he thinks she is perhaps to demonstrative in her grief, he wants to talk to her and help her. He acknowledges that she is unhappy, and he wants to be of assistance. The wife, however, isnt even willing to grant that her husband could be feeling any loss. When he begins to speak of their dead child, she recoils from him, crying Dont, dont, dont, dont (31-33). He asks Cant a man speak of his own child hes lost? (37), clearly confused that she would be so upset over the slightest mention of the child. She responds with an instant, Not you! (38), implying that only he isnt worthy of grieving. She doesnt appear to think he should be allowed any emotion at all, but still seems to expect him to be moreShow MoreRelatedStephen P. Chrysler in Trouble free essay sample

The automobile market is one of the most lucrative markets in the world. They have focused on international expansion since the late 1900s. This market has very successful international companies such as Mercedes-Benz, Lexis, Hyundai, Chrysler, Camry, Fiat, etc. All of these firms have held a position in the automobile industry. Even in economic hardships when demand for automobiles was decreased, the market did not faze them. Two firms prominent in this industry are Chrysler and Fiat which have both held successful positions in the late 1900s. Due to decreased market demand and lackluster products both firms have drastically diminished their market appeal. This has led to decreased profits which have led to European based company Fiat leaving the United States in the 1980s. American based firm Chrysler had to deal with sales drops and lack of demand. An alliance between both firms could potentially increase their customer base and future profits. We will write a custom essay sample on Chrysler in Trouble or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page This could be a very lucrative business venture for both firms if successful. Chrysler an American corporation has held a strong position in the automobile industry in the earlier 1900s. Fiat an Italian corporation has one of the strongest corporations in Italy. Among the three most substantial United States automobile makers, Chrysler is the smallest one. This means that Chrysler’s stand in the automobile market needs much improvement. With the vast growing nature of the United States and international automakers, Chrysler has to improve their performance and appeal to even compete at their level. Chrysler filed for bankruptcy protection under section 364 of chapter 11 of the US bankruptcy code. Chrysler announced that it would establish a global strategic alliance with Fiat. CEO of Fiat Sergio Marchionne will take over as presidency of Chrysler as well. People want to know how the new management will not only affect the corporation but also the stakeholders that have invested in both companies. Introduction The Chrysler Corporation was founded by Walter Chrysler in 1924 out of what remained of the Maxwell Motor Company. Chrysler greatly expanded in 1928 when it acquired the Dodge Brothers Company and began selling vehicles under those brands; that same year it also established the Plymouth and DeSoto automobile brands. In the 1970s a number of factors including the 1973 oil crisis impacted Chryslers sales, and by the late 1970s, Chrysler was on the verge of bankruptcy. Lee Iacocca was brought in as CEO and is credited with returning the company to profitability in the 1980s. In 1987, Chrysler acquired American Motors Corporation, which brought the profitable Jeep brand under the Chrysler umbrella. In 1998 Chrysler merged with German automaker Daimler-Benz AG to form DaimlerChrysler; the merger proved contentious with investors and Chrysler was sold to Cerberus Capital Management and renamed Chrysler LLC in 2007. Like the other Big Three automobile manufacturers, Chrysler was hit hard by the automotive industry crisis of 2008. Chrysler received billions of dollars in loans from the United States government in late 2008 and early 2009 to prevent it from shutting down. Chrysler filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization on April 30, 2009. Chrysler should create a new company with Fiat in which Fiat would initially have a 20% stake, which would later be increased up to 35%. The Voluntary Employees Benefit Association (VEBA) would have a 55% stake in it, the US Treasury department an 8% stake. The Canadian and Ontario governments would have a combined 2% stake, with the Canadian government holding 1. 33%, and the Ontario government holding the remaining 0. 67% stake. Chapter One Situation Analysis 1. 1 Industry Overview The U. S. motor vehicle manufacturing industry employs 880,000 workers, or approximately 6. 6% of the U. S. manufacturing workforce, including those who work in the large motor vehicle parts manufacturing sector, as well as those who assemble motor vehicles. Since the beginning of the decade, the nations automotive manufacturing sector has eliminated more than 435,000 automotive manufacturing jobs (or an amount equal to about 3. 3% of all manufacturing jobs in 2008). The employment level first dipped below one million in 2007 and fell to 880,000 workers last year. With the restructuring and bankruptcy of Chrysler and General Motors, and the ongoing recession in the auto sector, employment in the nations automotive manufacturing industry will most likely shrink in 2009 and 2010 as additional assembly, powertrain, and auto parts plants close. Economically the automobile industry is an oligopoly. This is why the Big 3 remains the Big 3. The nature of building cars makes it difficult for small players to enter the market. The cost of entry is high. As an oligopoly, the Big 3 also tend to pay more attention to one another than to customers or competitors. If GM adds airbags, Chrysler and Ford add airbags. Being the smallest, Chrysler tends to follow rather than lead. Ideas generated outside the Big 3 tend to be ignored. When times are good, automakers can sell anything they can produce. That includes bad cars. But during recessions, automakers lose billions of dollars just maintaining operations. This is basically due to the high fixed costs. And those costs are getting higher as tight union contracts make labor a â€Å"fixed† cost. The industry consists of six segments: three mature markets (North America, Japan and Western Europe) and three emerging markets (Asia-Pacific, Eastern Europe and Latin America). The leading competitors in the industry are the Big Three (GM, Chrysler and Ford) and the Japanese Manufacturers (Toyota, Honda, and Nissan). To gain market shares companies are concentrating towards continuous improvement, innovation and cost control. 1. 2 Strategic Group Mapping Fig. 1: Strategic Group Mapping 1. 3 Key Success Factors The automotive industry is one of the largest business sectors in America, employing thousands and creating products that affect the way people spend money in a major way. Though there are many ways for an automotive company to achieve success, every strong company in the industry must possess some key critical success factors to ensure long-term profitability. 1. 3. 1 Positive Image One critical factor that often defines an automotive company is its public image. Because buyers entrust their safety, along with a sizable portion of their income, to a car company, the perception of the company figures greatly in the buying decision. Factors influencing an automotive companys image include advertising, word of mouth and expert reviews and opinions. 1. 3. 2 Distribution Network A more practical critical success factor for any automotive company is a strong network for distribution. Because cars and trucks are not sold directly to customers, auto manufacturers rely on franchised dealerships to provide local showrooms. These dealers must be knowledgeable and reputable to sell cars, which is essential for the automaker. Like auto corporations, dealers are reliant on a positive image that may be influenced by, or influence in turn, the image of the automaker. 1. 3. 3 Cash Flow A healthy cash flow is another practical critical success factor. When an automaker provides incentives or lowers prices, it almost always sells more cars, but the profit margin may not be a healthy one. At the same time, an automaker needs to keep costs under control, including line items that are prone to fluctuation such as the price of raw materials and outsourced components. Achieving a sustainable cash flow is central to the frequent discussions between automakers and employee unions. 1. 3. 4 Compliance Automakers must also ensure that the vehicles they sell are in compliance with various federal and local regulations. These include emissions standards, fuel efficiency and safety standards. While it may cost less to produce vehicles that perform marginally in these areas, the cost of a safety recall or government-mandated repairs are often much higher and difficult to anticipate. . 3. 5 Flexibility An elusive critical success factor for the automotive industry is the ability to be flexible. American car buyers may change their buying habits quickly in response to factors like the state of the economy, the price of fuel and new automotive technologies. It is essential that automakers remain attentive to these trends and keep in place a system that can adapt quickly to create new products that meet the current and near-future needs of customers. 1. Indust ry Wide Strategic Issues 1. 4. 1 Globalization Hardly a new phenomenon, globalization in the automotive industry accelerated in the 1980s when Japanese automakers made significant headway in penetrating the U. S. market. Today, however, the pace of globalization has intensified and global sourcing has become a competitive imperative. At the same time, automotive companies see great potential in developing regions such as China and India as their consumer markets begin to emerge. Squeezed by intense competition — increasingly from new competitors in low-cost countries — as well as industry overcapacity, high labor costs in mature markets and customer resistance to price increases, automotive companies must establish sustainable and flexible cost structures, driving them to relocate global sourcing to â€Å"low-cost† regions, Asia, in particular. In addition, as they establish optimal global manufacturing capabilities, automotive companies also must refine their product development strategies to respond to the demands of these emerging markets. . 4. 2 Innovation with Limited Financial Resources Automotive companies face another dilemma: how to maintain innovation when financing is tight. The need to develop new technologies and innovative products able to lure consumers and provide a competitive edge has never been more important for maintaining profitability over the long term. Car buyers are looking for new features such as navigation to ols, entertainment options and safety improvements, but resist paying premiums for these advancements. Yet, given the cost and pricing pressures, automotive companies are finding it difficult to free internal financial resources for investment in research and development. At the same time, securing external funding also is more challenging as the industry has become less attractive for investors compared to other sectors, particularly in the short term. With financing tighter, automotive companies must pursue creative product solutions, leverage their internal strengths and, more often, make acquisitions and cement partnerships with companies that can help enhance and expand product offerings and spread investments over more units. . 4. 3 Leadership in the Automotive Industry Automotive companies also must be looking continually for new opportunities in the market. Every four to five years, you need to move on, either by making acquisitions or finding new market niches, otherwise your profitability drops. 1. 4. 4 Flexible Production and Cost Structure In response to the forces of glob alization, competition and pricing constraints, a key priority for nearly half of the automotive companies is establishing and maintaining a more variable cost structure. Another strategic priority, is maintaining a flexible production system to position the company to respond quickly to shifts in global demand. Automotive leaders must be able to manage cash and make costs more variable in order to adjust quickly to volatility in demand and respond to new opportunities. They do this through outsourcing, partnerships, technology innovation and new production methods. When 350 automotive executives were globally surveyed to get their views on the primary challenges facing the industry, the results were as follows: Fig. 2: Automotive Industry Challenges . 5 Competitive Situation Analysis 1. 5. 1 Porter Five-Force Model * Bargaining Power of Buyers is considered to be high due to the fact that there are competitive brands * Competitor Rivalry is high as the consumer considers cars as a commodity and hence there is surplus * Bargaining Power of Suppliers is high as they have some kind of control over the industry * Threat of New Entrants is low due to the huge investment required in capital, technologic, marketing * Threat of Substitutes is low as owning a car has always been a necessity . 6 Competitor Analysis Competitor| Strategy Used| Reason| Japanese Companies (Honda, Toyota) | Best Cost| Japanese automakers tried so hard to always stick to competitive prices with high quality | German Companies (Mercedes, BMW) | Focus Differentiation| German automakers have always been known by focusing on the best quality for the engine despite the cost | American Companies (Chrysler, Chevrolet, Ford, GM) | Broad Differentiation| Focused on differentiation themselves for the majority of the American consumer | . 7 Firm – Self Analysis 1. 7. 1 SWOT Strengths * Third largest automobile manufacturer in the US ever since 1928; domination of the minivan market * In 2008, there was 8% growth in sales outside the US * Chrysler Mexican, Canadian and other international operations were not part of the bankruptcy filing * Chrysler started a global corporate advertising campaign to restore confidence in the company Weaknesses * Declining sales made it difficult for Chrysler to continue * Chrysler idn’t benefit from the merger with Daimler and kept focusing on avoiding clashes * Poor Management resulted in drop in the market share during early 2000s * In the Fiat – Chrysler alliance, the company is to be owned by multiple owners Opportunities * Establishing a global strategic alliance with Fiat * The American government tried to position the bankruptcy as NOT a sign of weakness * Fiat would make available its entire product portfolio, along with its powertrain technology Threats * The fierce competition with the Japanese high performing, lower price cars * U. S economy is struggling and consumers aren’t spending as much money as they used 1. 7. 2 Firm Strategic Issues and Problems Poor Business Strategy Analysts attributed Chrysler’s financial problems to its poor business management. In the early 1970s, when fuel prices were going up and consumers in the United States started preferring fuel-efficient vehicles, Japanese companies like Toyota and Honda began coming out with compact and fuel-efficient cars to cater to these needs. However, Chrysler’s focus remained more on SUVs and trucks, leaving the Asian carmakers to capitalize on this change in consumer preferences. Other analysts criticized Chrysler’s decision to merge with Daimler. According to Iacocca, â€Å"Eaton50 panicked. We were making $1 billion a quarter and had $12 billion in cash, and while he said it was a merger of equals, he sold Chrysler to Daimler-Benz, when we should have bought them. †51 Similar analysts also criticized Daimler’s decision to run Chrysler as a stand-alone division. They opined that Daimler wanted to keep Chrysler separate from its luxury Mercedes-Benz marquee. By doing this, it did not take advantage of the benefits of developing vehicles together. Lack of Innovation According to analysts, Chrysler’s sluggishness in launching innovative models when its Japanese competitors kept coming out with new designs resulted in the company’s declining sales. Japanese companies continued to offer fuel-efficient vehicles, while Chrysler continued to produce fuel-guzzling trucks. Chrysler, which had been the innovator of automatic transmission, power steering, and brakes, just did not live up to the consumer’s expectations. Although it came up with some innovative products in the early 1980s, quality-related issues dented the brand image of its cars. After the merger with Daimler, Chrysler introduced some new models. However, those models did not get much consumer attention. Even after Cerberus bought a majority stake in Chrysler, the company could not invest enough money in research and development because of the declining sales of Chrysler’s vehicles. The U. S. Auto Task Force also commented in March 2009 that â€Å"Chrysler’s products have also historically underperformed in terms of quality, which remains a significant challenge. Unlike GM, which has had a number of successful recent product introductions and has developed a new global product development process that has promise, there are few tangible signs that Chrysler can reverse its share erosion. The Global Financial Crisis In 2008, the tight credit situation, volatility in the stock markets, problems in the U. S. housing market, increases in unemployment, and declines in incomes started affecting consumer spending. As a result, the U. S. car market was also badly affected. Those who wanted to purchase vehicles found it difficult to get loans or found the available financing too expensive. In 2008, the U. S. auto industry experienced its worst year since 1992. The total sales of cars and light trucks were 13. million, a decline of 18% compared to 2007. The United States was the largest market for Chrysler. As of November 2008, 73 percent of its sales were from the U. S. , 61 percent of its vehicles were produced in the country, 78 percent of its materials were purchased in the U. S. and 62 percent of its dealers were based in the U. S. As Chrysler’s market was restricted to the United States alone, the global financial crisis which originated in the country affected it s sales badly, leaving the company struggling to carry on its business.
